T to the Seventh Week Two Reflection

23 May 2020 Welcome to the second weekly reflection for Teige and Tahg Take on Thrilling Traumatic Thoracic Treatments! As senior project begins to wrap up, Tahg and I have learned a lot more than we probably thought we were going to learn. Diane's sessions really helped me understand the intricacies behind the human body, and we furthered our learning from Diane by watching surgeries. Not much was different when comparing last week to this week; however, our knowledge has expanded tenfold. I can't wait to see what the final week brings!  See you tomorrow! Teige Wright

T to the Seventh Day Nine

19 May 2021 Welcome to day nine of Teige and Tahg Take on Thrilling Traumatic Thoracic Treatments! We gathered at my house today at 8:00 to watch surgeries. We decided to watch a posterior hip replacement to go along with the anterior hip replacement that we had watched a couple days before. An anterior hip replacement is more difficult and less used compared to the posterior we watched today. We then moved to an ACL reconstruction as many torn ACL patients come into Diane’s office. The way Tahg and I are watching surgeries that relate to what we see in Diane’s office is helping me understand how Diane does her job. See you tomorrow! Teige Wright

T to the Seventh Day Eight

18 May 2021 Welcome to day eight of Teige and Tahg Take on Thrilling Traumatic Thoracic Treatments! Today we started at 9:00 in Diane’s office for some physical therapy practice. We met with the usual patients along with a couple new ones. The man who had crashed his snowmobile was back for more treatment. We helped Diane by monitoring different exercises that the patients performed throughout the day. Tahg took a test on the components of the knee while I was getting my second COVID vaccination. I avoided the test for a couple days as now I have to take it next Tuesday. I absolutely love working at Ragged Mountain Physical Therapy, Tahg and I are always laughing and, of course, working hard. See you tomorrow! Teige Wright

T to the Seventh Day Seven

17 May 2021 Welcome to day seven of Teige and Tahg Take on Thrilling Traumatic Thoracic Treatments! Today Tahg arrived at my house at 8:30 for some surgery watching! We started off the day with a mitral valve replacement surgery similar to the aortic valve replacements we have been watching but just in a different area of the heart. We then moved on to a similar surgery, a tricuspid valve replacement. I understand what is happening more and more the more often we watch these valve replacements. I feel like I could do one myself. Maybe not.  See you tomorrow! Teige Wright

T to the Seventh Week One Reflection

16 May 2021 Welcome to the first weekly reflection for Teige and Tahg Take on Thrilling Traumatic Thoracic Treatments! This week was extremely productive as we got just under thirty hours of work done. It was fascinating to see my knowledge slowly start to connect from watching surgeries to working with Diane. I found that the more surgeries I watched, the more I would understand some of the things that Diane’s patients were being treated on, and vice versa. For instance, after learning about a patient that had been through a hip replacement, Tahg and I watched a hip replacement surgery. We were able to connect what was occurring in the video and what we had learned in Diane’s office. I can’t wait to see what next week brings! See you tomorrow! Teige Wright

T to the Seventh Day Six

15 May 2021 Welcome to day six of Teige and Tahg Take on Thrilling Traumatic Thoracic Treatments! Today was a concise day as Tahg and I only met for under three hours; we watched an aortic valve replacement. The more of these specific types of surgery we watch, the more I can understand and predict what will happen next. I honestly feel like I’m beginning to understand the ins and outs of being a cardiothoracic surgeon. See you tomorrow! Teige Wright

T to the Seventh Day Five

14 May 2021 Welcome to day five of Teige and Tahg Take on Thrilling Traumatic Thoracic Treatments! Today we started bright and early to watch some surgeries at my house. We decided to go with different types of surgery; instead of watching our typical cardiothoracic surgeries, we went for three brain surgeries. The first two were tumor removals. Is it weird for me to say that I found them extremely satisfying? I think the answer is yes. The third was an aneurysm removal; again, this was a very satisfying procedure. Overall today was a productive and informative day.  See you tomorrow! Teige Wright

T to the Seventh Day Four

13 May 2021 Welcome to day four of Teige and Tahg Take on Thrilling Traumatic Thoracic Treatments! We started at 9:00 this morning at Ragged Mountain Physical Therapy. From our start time until noon Tahg and I worked with Diane as she went about her daily routine. It was an exciting day, but it doesn’t get stimulating until after lunch. When we came back at 1:00, we were greeted by Diane and immediately given Russian Stim, which is a ten-second pulsing of electricity to make your muscles contract. Then, to make it even more difficult for us, Diane made us do squats while the pulses tightened our muscles. I think she might have been enjoying it. See you tomorrow! Teige Wright

T to the Seventh Day Three

12 May 2021 Welcome to day three of Teige and Tahg Take on Thrilling Traumatic Thoracic Treatments! Today we started at 8:30, and we were back home watching surgeries. We decided on a hip replacement to get the ball rolling. We were inspired by Tahg’s hip surgery and a patient in Diane’s office to watch this specific type of surgery. After watching that, we moved to a coronary bypass, and then we finished with a “day in the life” video of a cardiothoracic surgeon. See you tomorrow! Teige Wright

T to the Seventh Day Two

11 May 2021 Hello and welcome to day two of Teige and Tahg Take on Thrilling Traumatic Thoracic Treatments! This morning was quite the early one as Tahg, and I met Diane Fowler at 8:00 at Ragged Mountain Physical Therapy. We observed as Diane went through her day meeting with quite a few patients. One of the patient’s stories I would like to share with you, the young man who came in had been in a snowmobiling accident in the winter. He had crashed into the shoreline and broken many different bones and structures in the body. However, the most intriguing part of his injury was an open book pelvic fracture because of how the fracture was repaired. It was a two-incision process, with one being on the side of the stomach where his organs were pulled to the side. The other was at the bottom of the stomach, where the pelvic bone was fixed. I’m excited to get back to watching surgeries tomorrow! See you tomorrow, Teige Wright

T to the Seventh Day One

10  May 2021 Welcome to day one of Teige and Tahg Take on Thrilling Traumatic Thoracic Treatments! Today Tahg and I gathered together bright and early at 8:45 to begin watching surgeries. I know this might sound odd, but we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We started the day by watching an aortic valve replacement in which Dr. Ramachandi opened up the ascending aorta and took out the calcified aortic valve. We then moved to a slide trachioplasty on a child, fixing scar tissue build up in the trachea; it took place at WUSTL. These surgeries took over five hours to watch; however, Tahg and I were very engaged in what was occurring. I even went as far as to mimic the suturing that was taking place in the video. See you tomorrow! -Teige
